A Tale of False Worship

' … One day, the Family was gathering fruit in the wilderness. The Mother had advised that each Child should keep what she harvested. Most of Her Children worked diligently, and the harvest proceeded well.

However, there was one Son who preferred not to work for his succour, and instead to steal from the Family's winter stores. All day he had been offering aid to his Mother, and to his Sisters and Brothers, when he was conscious of Her sight, and had made many furtive attempts to raise himself up in his Mother's eyes.

Now, thinking himself unobserved, the Son crept to the shed where the winter stores were held, and ate his fill. He gorged himself far beyond his need, and then he returned to the Family, in order to further praise his Mother.

His Mother paid him no special heed, and the Son was well pleased that his deception had proved so successful.

Several days passed, and the Son began to make plans for his future glory. He realised that there had been no need to be so wary of his Mother's wrath. She was easy to deceive, and he would do so again.

Then one night, the Son awakened with a piercing pain in his stomach. He called out for his Mother, and She approached. She knelt by him and took his head in her arms. "Hush, my Child, it will soon be over."

At the look of confusion in his eyes his Mother shook Her head sadly and spoke: "I taught you, my Son, I guided you as far as you would be guided. But you made your own choice, and now you have been judged for it. You fawned before me, pretended loyalty to the Family, and made false worship of Sithis. Whilst all the while your faith was false. Did you really believe you could escape Her judgement?"

Then a piercing scream erupted from the throat of the Son, and dozens of venomous Snakes began to pour from his mouth. The food which the Son had stolen from the Family had been transformed through the power of Sithis into the eggs of Snakes, and they had now hatched in his stomach.'

Here endeth the lesson of  Sithis
