The Tainted Pool

One night, as Her children slept, there appeared to one of Her Daughters a dream. She saw men clothed in robes of gold feasting at a table. They gorged themselves with wine and meat far beyond their fill, and still they continued to eat. Slowly the men began to swell, and to Her Daughter’s horror one by one their sides slowly split apart, until all lay dead.

When the Daughter woke, her brothers and sisters were already preparing to leave the camp. She rose and together the Children moved off. After some time, they came to a pool. They had drunk and bathed well already that morning, yet some of the Children argued that they should stop and take their pleasure of the pool.

"No, we have far yet to travel today", spoke one of the brothers, "We cannot afford this luxury."

"Who cares?" said another, "What does it matter if we are a little late? I am not thirsty, but I would still not refuse a drink."

"Very well", replied the first, "We shall stop and drink."

Then Her Daughter remembered her dream. "Please, we must not drink of this water. Last night I received a vision, and if we drink here we shall all die."

At this the face of her sister reddened. "What do we care for your vision? You had a dream, that was all. I will not let it part me from my pleasure." As she strode towards the pool, the Daughter who had the vision caught her arm, trying to pull her back. Then Her Children rounded on the prophet and hurled her into the water, holding her beneath the surface until her word was silenced for ever. They slung her body beneath some bushes, and returned to the pool.

That night, the parasite within the water began to work upon the stomachs of Her children, and soon all were dead, the bellies torn asunder.
